About

Who We Are
Oriam Walking Football (OWF) was founded in 2015 and is open to men 50+ and females 40+. The sport allows for people of various ages and skill sets to get moving again with our ethos being to improve, maintain and promote the physical, mental and social wellbeing of older adults through Walking Football. The club is affiliated with Walking Football Scotland and currently fields seven competition teams across different age groups and genders.

The objective of OWF is to encourage the practice, promotion, development, and participation of Walking Football in Edinburgh and the wider community. OWF is dedicated to improving the physical and mental health of everyone (40+ females, 50+ men) through the sport of Walking Football, regardless of level played, fitness, or gender. Our main objectives are to provide our members with regular sessions under Walking Football Scotland (WFS) rules. While we will provide the outlet for some of our members to compete at a competitive level in the WFS leagues, our main priority will always be to our regular session members throughout the week.

More than a Football Club”

Our motto is we are “More than a Football Club” and we are. From our main draw of football, we have a social hub of other activities within OWF. For example, we have monthly walks around Edinburgh and the surrounding area. We have a golf group who meet up every few months to play a Stableford at each member’s golf clubs. We have groups that are involved in Walking Tennis, pool, golf and badminton. Throughout the year we run a few social outings such as at the Edinburgh festival, boom battle bar and our annual Christmas night out and we regularly get together after our sessions for coffee, tea cake and a good blether! Even players who are not playing at the moment tend to come along for the social element!

So, there is certainly more than football at our Club and If football is not necessarily for you and you want to participate in any of the above, then Oriam Walking Football Club is for you. As we generally say to many new members “What do you have to lose?” Click on our social link to see further information on these activities.

What is the meaning of Oriam?

The name “Oriam” is primarily known as the name for Scotland’s national performance centre for sport, located at Heriot-Watt University’s campus in Edinburgh.

The name “Oriam” was chosen for the sports centre and, according to a report from FIFA, it is a loose translation from the Scots Gaelic for “I am gold.” This reflects the ambitious goal of the center to help Scottish Sportsmen achieve success.
